BUILT FOR ACCURATE SLITTING

AND MATERIAL INTEGRITY

The WSL is engineered from the ground up for converting high-end technical foams, films, and composite laminates.

By combining precision pneumatic circular knives with a highly sensitive loop-controlled center winding system, the machine
prevents web deformation, eliminates telescoping, and guarantees pristine edge quality run after run.

Featuring precise nip roll and height adjustments alongside an integrated Corona treatment unit, the WSL fits seamlessly
into heavy-duty production environments where zero-defect output, inter-layer bonding strength and maximum uptime are absolute
non-negotiables.

Best suited for

  • Slitting and laminating specialty foams without causing any structural deformation or cell collapse.
  • Precise web alignment using pneumatic circular knives, easily configurable with or without overlap.
  • Single-pass and Multi-pass lamination and slitting workflows, utilizing dual-roller sets to prevent micro-air inclusions during layerassembly.
  • Heavy-duty production handling jumbo rolls up to ø1200 mm in diameter and 500 kg in weight via center winding.
  • In-line Corona surface treatment to activate specialty foam substrates for maximum adhesive anchoring.
  • Flexible shaft handling with fast, interchangeable setups for both 3-inch and 6-inch cores.
  • High-volume operations looking to maximize ROI by driving down scrap rates and optimizing material yield.

One Platform. A Flawless Dual-Pass Workflow.

PASS 1: Foam Activation & Adhesive Coating

The raw specialty foam is unwound and passed through the Corona Treatment Unit to microscopically activate its surface. Immediately after, the high-tack adhesive layer is laminated onto the foam under precise nip-pressure, guaranteeing an unyielding bond.

PASS 2: Plastic Backing Application

The newly laminated adhesive foam roll from PASS 1 is fed back into the line. The machine laminates the plastic backing material onto the adhesive side, with the Corona unit switched off, while the pneumatic circular knives slit the final laminate to the exact customer-specified widths.

When to choose the WSL

  • You convert delicate, compressible foams and need exact tension control that prevents structural deformation.
  • You require 100% bubble-free lamination and look for a machine with dual-roller sets for precise stretching and post-pressing.
  • You want a clean, burr-free edge via accurately aligned pneumatically circular knives without adhesive bleeding or fraying.
  • You process jumbo rolls up to ø1200 mm and 500 kg that demand heavy-duty center winding and loop control to eliminate telescoping.
  • Your production requires a dual-pass lamination workflow (foam activation followed by backing application) on a single, versatile machine platform.
  • You need rapid, toolless changeovers between 3-inch and 6-inch cores for high short-run flexibility.

Why it performs

MAXIMIZED YIELD, MINIMIZED SCRAP

Pneumatic circular knives and highly responsive loop-controlled tension eliminate edge waste, misalignments, and out-of-spec rolls. By preventing foam compression and telescoping, you extract the maximum amount of sellable, premium output from every single master roll. Yield and scrap reduction are the core KPIs the WSL is engineered around.

ZERO-DEFECT COMPOSITE QUALITY

Stable center winding tension across the full roll diameter ensures flawless winding density, run after run. Our unique dual-roller lamination system lightly stretches and nips the materials, systematically eliminating micro-air inclusions. The result? Completely homogeneous, tight rolls that perform flawlessly in demanding downstream printing processes.

HEAVY-DUTY INDUSTRIAL UPTIME

Operator-friendly knife positioning, rapid-access changeovers, and flexible 3″ and 6″ shaft configurations keep your production moving between different jobs. Enjoy short-run agility without losing the high productivity and massive output capacity of a heavy-duty, jumbo-ready platform.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the WSL?

The Crest WSL is an industrial, heavy-duty slitter rewinder and laminator designed specifically for high-precision conversion of flexible materials, technical films, and specialty foams. Engineered around maximizing yield and reducing scrap, it combines pneumatic slitting, specialized tension-controlled center winding, and optional inline lamination into a single, high-uptime platform.

What materials can the WSL process?

The WSL is optimized for tension-sensitive, compressible, and high-value materials. It flawlessly processes technical foam laminates(such as ProBAK®, Softprint®, Cushion-Mount™ and flexographic backing foams), PVC or Polyester (PET) carrier films, high-tack adhesive laminates and protective films. The platform is robust enough to handle jumbo master rolls up to ø1200 mm in diameter and 500 kg in weight.

What slitting methods does the WSL support?

The WSL utilizes high-precision pneumatic circular knives (crush-cutting). Driven by controlled air pressure, these knives ensure an ultra-clean, burr-free edge without causing adhesive ‘bleeding’ or material fraying. The system allows operators to easily align the material webs with precision, configuring them with or without an overlap depending on your specific job setup.

What slitting method does the WSL support?

Yes. With the optional integrated laminating unit, the WSL combines lamination, slitting and rewinding in a single workflow. This reduces handling steps, lowers scrap rates and shortens lead time on multi-layer products.

Can the WSL laminate and slit in one pass?

The WSL is highly flexible. While it can perform single-pass lamination and slitting for standard materials, it is uniquely optimized for the dual-pass production of complex flexo backing foams. In Pass 1, it activates the foam via Corona and applies the adhesive layer. In Pass 2, it applies the plastic backing film to the adhesive side and handles the final precision slitting. This dual-pass versatility allows you to run a complete production line on a single footprint.

What is the Corona treatment unit and when do I need it?

The Corona Treatment Unit is an inline surface activation system that uses a high-voltage electrical discharge to microscopically open up the molecular structure of non-porous materials. In this application, it is used during Pass 1 to treat the specialty foam substrate. By boosting the foam’s surface energy right before the lamination nip, it guarantees a superior, long-lasting bond with the adhesive layer without requiring chemical primers. During Pass 2 (applying the plastic backing), the Corona unit can simply be turned off.

Can the WSL be customized?

Yes. Every converting line has unique requirements based on its material mix and upstream/downstream equipment. The WSL platform offers modular customization, including adjustable working widths (up to 1650 mm and beyond), quick-changeover chucks for both 3-inch and 6-inch cores, advanced edge-guiding systems, and custom configurations for loop-controlled web tension to perfectly match your specific production volumes.
